The Rowing Program is based out of the John M.S. Lecky UBC Boathouse on the south arm of the Fraser River in Richmond, BC. Our Interim Head of Rowing, Jessica Davies, our Rowing Coordinator, and our coaches oversee on-campus dryland training and on-water sessions throughout the year. Boys in Grades 8–12 are eligible to try out for a spot within the Program.
 
Student-athletes have opportunities to participate in regattas held in the Lower Mainland, on Vancouver Island, in Washington State, and the Canadian Secondary Schools Rowing Association Regatta held in June in St. Catharines, Ontario. Participants in regattas cover the costs for attending out-of-town events on a shared cost-recovery basis

  • Programs

    Novice
    • Typically Grade 8 and 9 boys who are new to the sport. This program runs in Terms II and III, and requires tryouts.
    • Athletes selected for the team will learn the basics of the sport, starting with safety, and will end their season(s) with our indoor championship (Term II), or a travel and local regatta (Term III).
    • Novice trains 3-4 times per week.
    Junior B Development
    • Typically Grade 9 and 10 boys who are returning to the team, but are not yet at a competitive level. This program runs all three terms.
    • Athletes on this team will refine their technique and focus on the basic knowledge of the sport. These athletes will attend most regattas, but typically will not attend training camps or out-of-province events.
    • Development trains 4-5 times per week.
    Competitive Notice
    • Students who are new to the team after Grade 8, who are looking for an accelerated program designed to fast-track them through the year to compete at the CSSRA National Championship in June. Students will typically have an opportunity to tryout for this program in September and November.
    • Athletes on this team will continue to refine their understanding of the sport and begin to learn more challenging technical or strategic concepts. These athletes will attend most regattas, training camps, and some out-of-province events.
    • Competitive trains 4-7 times per week.
    Junior B Competitive
    • Typically, Grade 9 and 10 boys who are returning to the team, able to compete at a high level and add to the team environment.
    • Athletes on this team will continue to refine their understanding of the sport and begin to learn more challenging technical or strategic concepts. These athletes will attend most regattas, training camps, and some out-of-province events.
    • Competitive trains 6-7 times per week
    Junior A
    • Typically Grade 11 and 12 boys who have demonstrated good rowing skills and contribute to the team culture.
    • Athletes on this team will refine their technical skills and compete at a level where strategy and execution are important. These athletes will attend most regattas and training camps, including out-of-province events.
    • Top performing athletes in this programme sometimes go on to row for University, Provincial, or National teams.
    • Junior A trains 7-8 times per week.
