Saints Book Club Wraps Up The Year With

The Riveter

On Tuesday, May 19th, the Saints Book Club gathered for its final meeting of the year about the novel The Riveter by Vancouver author, Mr. Jack Wang. 30 students from Grades 8–12 and six teachers met over pizza to share their thoughts on the book. After a group reading and ice breaker, students split into smaller groups to continue the discussion on their own. To find out what we talked about, check out the questions created by Preston S. ‘27 and Tim D. ‘27 here!

The Riveter gave us so much to discuss: the history of WWII, the Chinese-Canadian experience during the war, the racial tensions that shaped that time, the familiar regional setting of Vancouver, and the characters’ complex relationships.

For those interested in Book Club: All students and staff are welcome to join! We read three books a year and strive to choose books that have been published in the last two years. We will choose our next novel in mid-September, and our first meeting will take place after the November Term Break. For more information, please contact Ms. Sandra Gin at: [email protected], or Ms. Stephanie Chan at: [email protected].

Athletics Updates

Rugby
Rugby Provincials are underway as both the Senior and Junior Programs prepare to take on the province’s best teams. The Junior Team is currently competing from May 22nd–24th at South Surrey Athletic Park after entering the tournament ranked third in BC, and will look to finish off an outstanding season with a strong provincial showing. The Senior Team now turns its focus to the BCSS Championships in Abbotsford from May 27th–30th, where the boys will look to build on a season of hard work and determination as they chase another Provincial Title.

Senior Rugby
After a season filled with hard work, growth, and determination, the boys continue to build toward the BCSS Championships in Abbotsford from May 27th–30th and the opportunity to compete against the top programs in the province. With Provincials now in sight, the team is eager for the challenge ahead and will look to bring the Provincial Title back home once again. For many of the graduating players, this will be their final opportunity to represent the School, making for an exciting and meaningful finish to the season.

Junior Rugby
As you are reading this, the Junior Rugby Team is currently competing at the BC Invitational Tournament (May 22nd–24th) at South Surrey Athletic Park. The boys took home two strong wins today against Fleetwood and D.W Poppy.

The team has now advanced to the Semi-Final round, which will take place tomorrow, May 23rd at 3:00 pm at South Surrey Athletic Park. The boys will look to continue building on their momentum as they aim to cap off an outstanding season with a strong showing against the province’s best teams. Good luck tomorrow, boys!

Rowing
The St. George’s Rowing Program is eager to hit the water at this weekend’s Delta Deas Regatta, building on an impressive outing at the recent Shawnigan Regatta. With athletes continuing to put in strong work both on the water and here at school, the Regatta presents another valuable opportunity for the boys to test themselves against some quality competition.

Badminton
The St. George’s Badminton Team have secured their place at the Provincial Championships in Burnaby next week from May 27th-29th. After a very dominant season, our boys enter the competition ranked as a top-seed school and defending champions. All eyes will be on Saints as we look to retain the title. The event will kick off at 9:40 am against Pinetree BCIT. Go, Saints, Go!

For all scheduling information, please see the official website: Provincials.

Field Hockey
The St. George’s Field Hockey Program continues to build momentum, with the boys bringing strong energy and commitment to training as they further develop their skills, communication, and team chemistry. With exhibition opportunities on the horizon, the group is continuing to grow in confidence and cohesion each week as they prepare to put their hard work into action.

Golf
With a top-three finish at this week's VS2S Zone Tournament, this result sends our Saints Golfers with a one-way ticket to Provincials. This result is a testament to the energy and commitment our Golfers have shown thus far on the fairways. Attitude to training and mid-week fixtures has put our players in a great position entering Provincials early June at the GreenTee Country Club in Langley. Last-minute preparation will take place with a few rounds scheduled next week at Langara and Point Grey before the big dance. Good luck, boys!

Ultimate
After a strong season built on growth, teamwork, and determination, the Junior Ultimate Team is set to compete at Provincials on May 25th and 26th at Newton Athletic Park. The group has shown steady improvement throughout the year and is eager for the chance to compete on one of the biggest weekends of the season. Best of luck to the team as they head into Provincials and represent the School with pride.

Tennis
This week, our Tennis Team has been competing at the BC Tennis Provincials, running from May 20th–24th at the UBC Tennis Centre. Yesterday, the boys faced off against defending Provincial Champions, Magee, in the semi-final round, falling just short of a win after a hard-fought match.

The team bounced back today with an impressive win over Collingwood to secure the Bronze Medal at Provincials. Congratulations to the boys on an outstanding tournament and a tremendous effort throughout the season!

X-Country Mountain Biking
Our Saints Mountain Bikers have officially wrapped up for the year. Plenty of successful races across the term earned them a place in the Provincial Championships. Unfortunately, due to the limited number of available athletes at the time of Provincials, they will not attend the championships this year. Despite this, the boys and coaches can hold their heads high with what was an enjoyable and successful season on the mountain.

Track & Field
The Track and Field Team is currently competing at the Zone Championships on May 21st and May 22nd, aiming to qualify for the upcoming Track Provincials on June 4th-6th. The athletes have put in a strong season of training and are looking to deliver peak performances when it matters most as they chase the provincial qualification. Good luck to all the boys competing as they represent the School with pride and determination. There is also the Multi-Event Championships, where Robin Xiao ‘27 will be heading to North Delta Track and Field Facility to compete.

Water Polo
The St. George’s Senior Water Polo Team has been preparing in the pool over the past few weeks for their upcoming matchups. Don't miss the following games tomorrow, May 23rd: U14 vs. Burnaby at Saints Pool from 2:00–4:00 pm, and U16/18 vs. Storm at CACAC Pool in Coquitlam from 6:00–8:00 pm. The boys have put in strong training sessions and are ready to take that work into game day. If you can, come down to the pools and cheer the team on as they represent the School.

Follow the Saints Athletics Instagram account as we post frequently. It’s a great way to see recent scores and upcoming games! Go Saints Go!
