Grad Takes ReconciliACTION
On May 28th, St. George’s School hosted an Artist Ambassador visit with Josh Finlayson and Andy Maize of Skydiggers, the band. This event followed the culmination of a year-long project by the English First Peoples Grade 12 students. Over the year, the students explored literature through an Indigenous perspective, ultimately creating reconciliACTION projects in partnership with DWF. These projects ranged from exploring their heritage to redesigning programming code and allowed students to connect their new understanding to their personal experiences, marking the beginning of their reconciliation journey. Josh Finlayson emphasized the significance of non-Indigenous involvement in reconciliation, referencing his collaboration with Gord Downie on the Secret Path album.
~ Ms. S. Cuttilan
Last week, we also had an Assembly for Indigenous People's Month. Christopher Britt and Kevin Hearn, two guest artists, presented a musical collaboration with Chief Stacey Laforme’s poem "215:Reconciliation." Please enjoy this video of their performance:
Reach For The Top National Championships
Seven students (Derek Li ‘25, Alex Behar ‘25, Cole Meikle ‘25, Brian Qian ‘25, Justin Bao ‘25, Jerry Chen ‘26, Owen Chen ‘26) from St. George’s participated in the Reach for the Top National Championships, taking place in Ottawa over the weekend (May 31–June 2).
The event was hosted at Glebe Collegiate Institute by legendary trivia host Ryan Vickers and the top 16 schools in the nation were represented at this prestigious and long-anticipated in-person event (the first in nearly five years). The team played extremely well and unexpectedly broke into the semi-finals with an 8-3 record in prelims. Despite a valiant performance under the spotlights against the eventual undefeated champions, the team fell narrowly short in the semi-finals in a heartbreaking defeat.
The team returned to Vancouver with their heads held high and would like to sincerely thank Mr. Backhouse and Ms. Cuttilan for their supervision, support, and encouragement throughout the weekend.
Drama 11/12 Field Trip Recap
On June 4, Mr. Donnici’s Drama 11/12 class took a field trip to see an evening performance of Guys at Dolls at the Arts Club, along with the Crofton and York House Senior Drama classes. The students all participated in a talk-back with the show's cast afterwards and discussed getting into character, pre-show routines, overcoming stage fright, and what they hope the audience will take away from the performance. Everyone enjoyed this energetic and hilarious musical and appreciated connecting with old and new friends from both schools!
