Flex Day Highlights
The Languages Department hosted the Grade 8 Deep Dive, where the students met all the Languages teachers and were introduced to the language course options for Grade 9. They will have the opportunity to take French, Spanish, Latin, or Mandarin next year. In the afternoon, they participated in environmental sustainability workshops with their Advisor Groups. Some Advisor Groups made art out of recycled materials, and others created new clothing out of old shirts.
The Grade 9s spent their day off-campus for Global Insight Out Day, where they learned about the UN Sustainability Goals and local organizations who work to promote these goals. The grade was divided into eight groups. Each one visited two organizations across Vancouver and participated in different workshops, including sorting repurposed fabrics at FABcycle, decorating handmade soap at Employ to Empower, and planting fruit and vegetables at Fresh Roots Farm.
The Grade 10 took part in Take Your Child to Work Day. Students went to work with a parent to learn more about what they do for a living. Students who remained on campus were “adopted” by a faculty or staff member and shadowed them for a day.
The Grade 11s participated in Careers Day, with the theme Ready and Relevant. There were special guest presenters, including alumni who shared about the paths they took towards their current careers. Following guest presentations, the grade split off into groups and participated in an interview simulation, where alumni guests pretended to interview students for a summer job. Students were invited to use their personal experiences to answer their interview questions. In the afternoon, students selected a workshop to further their professional skills.
For yesterday’s Flex Day morning session, the Grade 12s worked on their Capstone Projects. In the afternoon, they had a study block and a toolkit session about sexual violence prevention. This workshop gave students an understanding of university campus life, strategies to prevent it, and tools to support peers.
The lunchtime activities hosted by the prefects had an Earth Month theme. There were sports intramural tournaments in the gyms and Earth Month Jeopardy!

ArtsWeek 2024
To quote James Turrell, a famous artist whose work plays with various concepts of human perception; "Perception is your own reality." This year’s ArtsWeek theme encapsulates the essence of how our individual interpretations and perspectives construct the world we perceive around us. Each of us sees the world through a unique lens, influenced by our experiences, beliefs, and emotions. Our line up of keynotes will be bringing different perspectives from their individual fields of art.
We are excited to have Mr. Paxton Downard, a seasoned prop master designer, kick off the week. He will discuss the process of creating both digital and real props for the film industry. Mr. Downard will share his expertise in creating illusions of reality that alter your perception of reality. Be prepared to be enthralled as Mr. Curtis Lum, an actor most recently known for his role in The Night Agent on Netflix, takes the stage. With his charismatic presence and compelling performances, Mr. Lum promises to leave a lasting impression on our audience. We will be inspired by Mr. Bruce Alcock, a musician, animator, and renowned trombone player. Mr. Alcock will share insights into his creative process and passion for music and his artistic vision for his animation. Our Grade 8–10 students are in for a treat with an exclusive circus performance by Circus West.
Grade 11 and 12 students attend the prestigious Rigg Award Ceremony in the Auditorium, celebrating artistic excellence and achievement. And as the week draws to a close, we come together to celebrate the remarkable student talents within our community as we watch the Best of Saintschella, featuring performances by our very own student musicians.
Throughout the week, our studios will come alive with artists such as Mr. Poliang Che, Master of Chinese Calligraphy and Chinese painting; Mr. Michael Abraham, renowned painter, offering life drawing workshops; and Mr. Clive Tucker, ceramics artist, for hands-on ceramics demonstrations. Also, don't miss out on our Rigg Pop-Up Workshops during lunchtime for a chance to unleash your creativity.
In the evenings, the excitement continues with the Rain City Reels Film Festival on Tuesday night, showcasing the best of student cinema. Then immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Saintschella on Wednesday night. Finally, on Friday evening, parents, staff, faculty, and alumni are invited to help us close off the entire week by indulging in the flavours of the 2024 Art and Wine Festival, hosted by the OBA Alumni Association.
Understanding the significance of perception opens the door to self-awareness and empathy. By acknowledging that everyone's reality is subjective, we foster a greater sense of understanding and tolerance towards others. Instead of rushing to judgments, we can take a moment to consider alternative viewpoints and appreciate the diversity of human experience.
