2009 - Alan C.M. Brown '54
Alan Brown was known as a passionate educator. He had a long and distinguished record as a leader in the field of education, having taught in the United Kingdom, Malaysia, and Canada.
Alan first came to St. George's in 1946, entering Grade 5. Except for the 1948 – 49 year, he remained at the school until his graduation from Grade 13 in June of 1955.
From very early on his in life, Alan demonstrated his talented and gifted mind. He graduated from St. George's at the top of his class in academics. He went on to UBC where he obtained a Bachelor of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering in 1959. In 1963, he received his Diploma in Education from St. John's College, Oxford University.
He then began teaching Physics and Mathematics at Shawnigan Lake School from 1963 to 1968. In 1968 he left Shawnigan, first to spend a summer at Stanford University, on a Shell Merit Fellowship for studies in Computer Education and then for a year of studies at Brown University as the recipient of a scholarship from US National Science Foundation, where he earned his MA in Teaching in 1969. In 1970, he began working for six months on his doctorate with the Computer Science Systems Group at the University of Toronto. He soon interrupted his studies, however, to take up a position as the School’s fourth Headmaster, serving from 1971 to 1989.
Under Alan's guidance, St. George's gained its reputation as a leader in academics. He was responsible for overhauling the School's curriculum and promoting excellence in all departments.
Upon retiring from St. George's, Alan was asked to serve as the founding headmaster of Southridge School in Surrey.
The Brown family has many connections with the School. Alan's brothers, Ralph '53, Peter '58, and Robert '68, attended the School as did his nephews, Jamie '86, Jason '89, Stephen O'Keefe '85, and Richard Hayes '86. Alan was also a strong supporter of the School. The entire St. George’s community was saddened to learn of Alan’s passing on December 23, 2009. Hundreds of friends, colleagues, and students attended a beautiful and unforgettable memorial service and reception at the School on January 9, 2010 to celebrate Alan’s life.
