Ms. Julie Matandac
February’s flex day brought lots of excitement to St. George’s School!
In the morning, the Grade 8s split up into two groups. One group worked on a mental health and experience survey in the Auditorium, while the other group participated in a circuit of Wing Games. These included a “Get To Know Your Wing” activity, an escape room, dart throwing, and the ever-fervent and wild Viking race! In the afternoon, they continued their rotation of activities, which included Digital Citizenship, a Dunbar community activity, a “Take The Lead” leadership activity, and a mental health-themed scavenger hunt.
The Grade 9s had a Language Deep Dive in the morning including Latin, French, Mandarin, and Spanish. In the afternoon, they split off into their Advisory Groups, where they focused on another lesson in career and community engagement.
The Grade 10s had an advisor-facilitated lesson in the morning highlighting workplace safety. In the afternoon, they returned to Career-Life Education class and some University Counselling.
The Grade 11s continued their off-campus community placements. These included a visit to a seniors’ home (Crofton Manor), some elementary schools to mentor younger students, and helping out at Food Stash Foundation, a local charity committed to reducing food waste and feeding those in need. It was a great experience for students to interact and socialize with people outside of their own school community.
The Grade 12s spent the morning working on their Career-Life Connection Capstone Projects, and in the afternoon, they were captivated by a presentation by none other than Mr. Len Gurr himself, speaking about the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in roles of leadership. It was another memorable Flex Day for the books!
