Senior School Updates — November 22, 2024

2024 Hamper Drive

Care Package Items
This year, the Senior School will be responsible for collecting items for care packages within their Advisory Groups. All Advisory Groups will be responsible for assembling two care packages. The care packages will consist of hygiene products and household cleaning supplies. All items are due the week of December 2-6 during their respective Advisory sessions. Each advisor will allocate items equitably through the Advisory Group and ensure everything is collected for inclusion in the care packages.

Teddy Bear Toss — November 24
The Teddy Bear Toss is an annual event featuring a St. George’s CSSHL Hockey Game where fans throw stuffed teddy bears onto the ice following the first St. George’s goal! This year, we are excited to host our rivals Shawnigan Lake School against our own U18 St. George’s Team at Father Bauer Arena in UBC on November 24th, starting at 4:30 pm. Families are invited to attend the game with their own teddy bear ready to toss it when we score! All bears will be donated as part of the Hamper Drive — there will also be teddy bears available for purchase by donation at the arena on game day. This is a great opportunity to support our Senior hockey players in a meaningful game and support an important cause.

Fundraising Events — November 25–29
The Student Government has worked tirelessly to provide multiple fundraising events at the Senior School for the students to participate in and raise donations for this year's Hamper Drive! During the weeks of November 25–29 and December 2–6, there will be a Junior and Senior Video Game Tournament, taking place during the lunch period. For a registration fee of $5, students are invited to show off their Fifa and NBA 2K skills while competing against their peers!

Students also will have the opportunity to show off their fashion sense during two specially themed Casual Days. Your sons will be asked to make a minimum $5 donation before they are permitted to show off their fantastic outfits! There will also be other opportunities for your sons to interact and support the Hamper Drive. We encourage all of our students to engage with these events and help generate funds for this important holiday campaign.

Flex Day Recap

Feeling well-rested following Term Break, students were back and full of energy for the fourth flex day of the year.

The Grade 8s began their day with a Math Department experience and then continued their rotating workshops. Groups split off to take part in various activities involving mental health, explore the Dunbar community, and discuss digital citizenship.

The Grade 9s started with a Science Department activity in the afternoon and then attended their Advisory Groups to engage in a community and career lesson.

The Grade 10s had toolkit activities that focused on Career Life Education. Groups rotated through activities including resume building, budgeting basics, writing cover letters, investing, and time management. In the afternoon, they focused on University Counselling.

The Grade 11s continued with their community placements. The grades separated into groups and went to various locations, some of which included the Junior School, the Museum of Anthropology at UBC, and Crofton Manor. The boys at Crofton Manor engaged in wonderful conversation with the seniors who live there and even entertained the group with a piano performance! In the afternoon, they had Career Life and University Counselling sessions.

The Grade 12s spent the morning in various hands-on workshops for University Counselling and Career Life Education. In the afternoon, they split up into different groups to focus on tool kits including education about AI and nutrition.
