Flex Day Highlights — September 19
There was plenty going on for our first Flex Day of the year. Morning and afternoon activities were separated by a beautiful Terry Fox run followed by hot dogs and chocolate milk on the field (and the weather gods were smiling 🙏).
The Grade 8s wrote short stories and practiced their oral presentation skills in the morning and finished the day developing their prefrontal cortices…it was all about executive functioning.
The Grade 9s played some of the most creative games I have heard of that blended the rules of at least two sports: Scrug (Soccer and Rugby), Kickball (Soccer and Baseball), and a Handball variant (Basketball and Field Hockey). In the afternoon, they were introduced to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and shown how some of those relate to our local community.
Our students in Grades 10, 11, and 12 spent the morning at the University Fair, which brought students from all over the city to get information from more than 50 universities. It was a great opportunity to start to think about life beyond the walls of St. George’s School.
The Grade 10s were also introduced to the work they will be doing in Career Life Education (CLE) and worked on some of their collaboration and problem-solving skills with some engaging team dynamics games with their advisors. The Grade 11s also worked on team dynamics by taking part in an activity on leadership and followership with their advisors. Then they finished the day by connecting with their University Counsellors and participating in a Scavenger Hunt with Ms. Konopaki, their Head of Grade.
The Grade 12s did some preliminary work with their University Counsellors in preparation for the application process, and then they finished the day reflecting on their purpose. This invovled a fascinating discussion using a Venn Diagram of what am I good at and what do I love/what am I passionate about. They ended the day with a big surprise from Mr. Klassen, their Head of Grade, and received their
GRAD JACKETS!
The Visual Arts Department
The Visual Art Department’s philosophy — Head, Heart, and Hand — ensures that students make thoughtful, intentional choices; that their work is personal and meaningful; and that they develop the technical skills necessary to bring their ideas to life.
This September, we warmly invited parents to our annual Meet The Teacher Evening, where the Great Hall was filled with student artwork showcasing their learning. Our exhibition, titled Visible Learning, highlighted how Visual Arts employed clear, objective outcomes to guide students through a range of creative challenges. From technical skills in painting, hand-building, wheel-throwing, printmaking, and drawing, to the thematic exploration evident in our Senior School artists’ work. Students were encouraged at every level to engage their hearts in the creative process. We hope you enjoyed the exhibition and that it provided insight into your son’s visual learning journey and the development of his visual literacy.
Through their Visual Arts classes, the students are preparing to navigate an ever-evolving world by engaging their imaginations, exploring perception, and creating meaning. Through collaboration, multiple intelligence strategies, and purposeful play, they are encouraged to express themselves, pursue technical excellence, and embrace creativity. The process of personal inquiry fosters independence and cultivates confidence in exploring new possibilities. The Arts remind us that thinking and feeling are not confined to language.
