Senior School Updates — March 15, 2024

Term 3 — Spring Uniforms

Upon our return to School on April 2nd, students are invited to wear the St. George’s School Spring Uniform. The Spring Uniform consists of a tucked in white St. George’s polo shirt (black polo for grads), grey pants, and grey socks. Shorts that are worn must be hemmed and accompanied with knee high socks. A black belt and black dress shoes should be worn as part of the uniform. Students are required to wear their blue blazer for assemblies and special events. How the uniform is worn is just as important as what is worn. Students who are unsure of whether or not their uniform is consistent with the school's guidelines, should see their Head of Grade or a school administrator for confirmation.

2024 Course Fair

Students are invited to attend the 2024 Course Fair on Friday, April 5th in the Great Hall to learn more about the course offerings for 2024-25 from the teachers who facilitate the courses. Students entering Grade 9 and 10 are invited to attend from 11:45 am–12:30 pm, while students entering Grade 11 and 12 are invited to attend from 1:00 pm–1:45 pm. Looking forward to seeing you there!

Flex Day Highlights

For this Flex Day, the Social Studies Department ran the Grade 8 morning Deep Dive. Students met all the teachers in the department and participated in three workshops that they selected on their own. The sessions included a diverse range of topics, such as an introduction to philosophy, an exploration of The Persons Case, and examination of flat earth theories. In the afternoon, students furthered their Global Stewardship learning by travelling to a new part of the city, enhancing their spatial awareness skills and delving into design thinking through an experiential lens.

The Grade 9 morning programming, facilitated by the Science Department, featured two engaging workshops: a Yeast Lab and a GMO Workshop. In the afternoon, students began to think about what courses they want to take for their upcoming Grade 10 year. Then they explored workplace hazards and created videos with the theme “staying focused at work” for the WorkSafeBC video contest.

The Grade 10s spent their morning doing a mix of University Counselling and CLE, which involved learning effective communication skills in a professional environment in preparation for Take Your Child to Work Day. After lunch, they worked on their Core Competency Reflections in a CLE extended session, and also began preparing for their upcoming Sea to Sky Trips, which are set to take place in April and May. The grade will be divided into eight groups and an Outdoor Education Teacher will take each group on a week-long trip through parts of BC!

The Grade 11s continued their volunteer placements in the morning, travelling to different locations around Greater Vancouver to develop connections and leadership skills. Many Advisory Groups visited their little buddies in elementary schools and played a variety of team games together. The afternoon session consisted of a mix of University Counselling and Professional Skills Workshops in preparation for Careers Week, which is scheduled for the second week of April. Faculty members hosted workshops that ranged from resume writing to increasing confidence in interviews.

The Grade 12s rotated activities throughout the day. They had a session of CLC and time to work on their Capstone Projects. In the morning, part of the grade did an AI Toolkit Workshop run by Mr. Crompton, who talked to them about AI and ways to incorporate it into their lives once they enter university. As part of their Capstones, students had to schedule meetings with their mentors and find sources to support their research.

The next Flex Day will be Thursday, April 11th.

Dragons' Lair 2024 — Calling All Entrepreneurs!

We live in a world today where creating something is easier than ever. No matter who you are, the internet has given you the ability to create. All of us can be inventors — they are entrepreneurs, and entrepreneurs change the world. At St. George’s School, it starts in Grade 8. Students make a minimum viable product. Then in Grades 10, 11, and 12, students have the opportunity to actually generate ideas, mold a Business Model Canvas, create a finished prototype, build their own websites, find customers, and make sales. Ideas become a reality.

We want to hear about your crazy ideas, something new, something different for our Annual Dragons’ Lair. In order to enter the Lair, you must make it through the first round held after school on Monday, April 8th and Wednesday, April 10th.

Finals are set for Thursday, May 23rd at 7:00 pm. With plenty of time in hand, we hope many of you can get started. If you are interested, please reach out to me or Ms. Orr at: korr@stgeorges.bc.ca.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and a chance for you to be an entrepreneur in the real world.

Business Club — Strive

On Sunday, March 10th, teams from St. George's School ventured to UBC to attend Strive, a tech-focused business competition for high school students. In the morning, students attended workshops and listened to guest speakers. In the afternoon, students consulted for Roblox, coming up with creative solutions ranging from creating a Robux cryptocurrency to a Virtual Reality city. After two rounds of presentations, a team consisting of Gabriel Kong '25, William Hou '25, Derek Li '25, Devin Yue '25, and Daniel Cao '25 emerged as finalists. In the final round of the competition, the team managed to place second out of the 270 attendees this weekend. The team learned a lot from this experience and are looking to bring this knowledge to future competitions.

The Saints Business Club meets regularly on Mondays during Senior lunch in Room 225. We plan to compete in many more competitions for the remainder of the year. For more information, feel free to contact the following students: Gabriel.kong2025@stgeorges.bc.ca, William.hou25@stgeorges.bc.ca, Devin.yue25@stgeorges.bc.ca, or Victor.zheng25@stgeorges.bc.ca.
