Saints golfers get a preview for the 2014 Provincial Championships

Squamish - BC In early September, a busload of St. George’s golfers made their way to Squamish Valley Golf Course for an opportunity to compete against each other in a Ryder Cup competition.  The four different formats utilized were: scramble, best ball, alternate shot and singles. The golfers were drafted by opposing team captains Sadiq Jiwa ’14 and Robert Murphy ’14. Team Sadiq was all about young talent with Perry Xin ’17, Kevin Yu ’16 and Alex Demens ’16. Team Robert had experience on their side with Sam Rowan ’14, Garde MacDonald ’15 and Mr. Proznick. The two main purposes of the trip were to create a bonding opportunity and gain experience on the course. Squamish Valley Golf Course is the site of the 2014 AAA BC High School Provincial Golf Championships and it is where St. Georges hopes to defend their provincial title.

Soon after the team arrived at the course, day one 9-hole match ups were announced for the scramble.  The pairings were Perry and Alex versus Robert and Mr. Proznick, Sadiq and Kevin against Garde and Sam. After 9 holes, Perry and Alex defeated Robert and Mr. Proznick by a score of 4up, thru 3 holes. While Sam and Garde won 1up thru 9. Each match was worth one point.

Saturday morning was a best ball format. Alex and Kevin were paired against Garde and Mr. Proznick and the other match was Sadiq and Perry against Robert and Sam.  Alex and Kevin won the first match 1up thru 18. The second match was won by Sadiq and Perry 3&2. Team Sadiq held the overall lead with a score of 3 to 1. We concluded the day with 9 holes of alternate shot. Alex and Kevin teed it up against Mr. Proznick and Sam. While the anchor match was Sadiq and Perry versus Garde and Robert. Alex and Kevin won their match with a nail-biting finish 1up thru 9. Sadiq and Perry won their match 3&2. Now the score leaned heavily in favor of Team Sadiq 5 to 1. Team Robert was going to need to win all of their matches on Sunday to force a sudden-death playoff. On Sunday, Team Robert was looking for an amazing comeback in the singles matches. The team captain announced the match-ups; Alex against Mr. Proznick, Perry against Robert, Sadiq against Sam and the anchor match Kevin against Garde. The breakdown of the final results were Perry defeated Robert 5&3, Alex beat Mr. Proznick 3&2, Sadiq overcame Sam 2&1 and Kevin battled from 4 down to tie the match at all square thru 18. The final score of the Ryder Cup was Team Sadiq: 8.5. Team Robert 1.5. Under the leadership of Sadiq, Alex and Perry were undefeated in their four matches. Many thanks to Mr. Proznick and Mr. Figueroa, our photographer, for accompanying the boys on the trip.
