Please note that Monday, January 13th, is a Pro-D Day, and there will be no classes on that day.

Progress Reports Next Week
Senior School students and families will receive a formal Progress Reports early next week, which contains grades, comments, work habits for year-long courses, and comments from the collection of educators who work with and care for each student: Advisor, Co-curricular Coaches, Teachers, and Head of Grade.
Students in Grades 8 and 9 will not have semester comments during the December Reporting Period. Instead, those courses will appear on our next Progress Reports in early March, which will have grades, comments, and work habits. These courses are Grade 8 and 9 ADST courses, Visual Arts courses, Theatre Arts courses, and Latin 8. Questions or requests for follow-up are best made directly to the teacher, coach, or advisor. Our next written reports will be issued in March, and the next conferences will be held in April.

Flex Day Recap
The final Flex Day of 2024 was rampant with festive holiday spirit, with boys and staff excited for the upcoming Winter Break!
The Grade 8s started the day with an interactive Socials Department Symposium where they rotated through a variety of intriguing sessions such as “Blackbeard: The Man, The Myth, The Legend!” and “Ra-Ra-Rasputin: The Unkillable Man and the Russian Revolution.” In the afternoon they engaged in a Career Life Education session focused on poverty, viewing an informative presentation by a worker at Covenant House Vancouver.
The Grade 9s dove into flex day with a grade-wide English Department activity in the morning. They also spent the afternoon in a Career Life Education session discussing the workplace risks, hazards, rights and responsibilities to prepare themselves for “Take Your Child To Work Day,” which will be in the New Year on the next Flex Day.
The Grade 10s spent the morning in a Career Life Education session discussing the importance of gratitude and ways to thoughtfully integrate this theme into their lives. They did this by writing a letter to someone in their life who they appreciate but do not show it enough. In the afternoon, they helped out with the Hamper Drive.
The Grade 11s went to their placements in the morning, which included visiting with seniors at Crofton Manor, mentoring younger students at the Junior School, and visiting other elementary schools in the city where they participated in holiday activities. In the afternoon, they had Career Life Connection toolkits.
The Grade 12s began their day with University Counselling, and by mid-morning, they were rewarded with delicious pies that were made for them by Sodexo to acknowledge their diligent effort in applying to post-secondary schools throughout the fall. The afternoon was busy with Career Life Connection work and an essential and beneficial naloxone training session.

The Hamper Drive:
A Longstanding Family Tradition
By Mr. Connor Jaques '17, Hamper Drive Coordinator & His Family
The Hamper Drive has been a mainstay in my family since I started attending St. George’s School in the fall of 2006. I remember as a Junior student bringing in my food items to build the hampers. I was eager to participate, but I was unaware of the significance of the event. 18 Hamper Drives later, I am still learning about why the Hamper Drive is so important. Having gone through 11 iterations as a student, five as an alumni, and two as a faculty member, one theme that endures is community. It’s the practice of coming together in support of a great cause, to provide service to people who need extra support over the holiday season.
I have not engaged in this act of service alone; like so many members of our community, this event has become a family tradition, not just a student affair. I am lucky enough to have had my entire family play a part in multiple Hamper Drives over my 18 years involved with the School. This year is no different, and it is a pleasure to be able to share in this special school tradition with my family within a community which I hold so dear.
Some of my favourite memories are lining the hallways outside Dixon Gym, enjoying an early Pancake Breakfast in McLean Hall, and the controlled chaos that ensued in the two gyms as we completed the assembly of our hampers. I hope to recreate some of these memories this year, and invite you all participate on the day, or contribute through donations and help us raise funds fundraising for this incredibly special St. George’s event.
Please enjoy the following reflections from my family members below about the Hamper Drive:
Ethan Jaques '19 — Brother (Simon + Tracey)
What I loved about the Hamper Drive is how it brought together Grades 1-12 and epitomized St. George’s School coming together as one whole community. While it has evolved from the long queues snaking their way through Wallace and Dixon Gym, its purpose of helping our community remains a constant.
Zenera Steiner '22 — ½ Brother (Russell + Tracey)
I remember being of the age where the Hamper Drive was just a “Saints thing”. Now looking back, I realize that the perseverance of my family to partake in every aspect of the Hamper Drive further encouraged involvement in the 34th Scout Troop. It's more than a “Saints thing,” it’s a human thing. I'm glad to have gone to a school where kindness is a part of the school's regular calendar. I try to bring that kindness with me every day of my life.
Robert Jaques '25 — ½ Brother (Simon + Julie)
The Hamper Drive is a fantastic event St. George’s School holds every year to help families who need extra support during the holiday season. I have been participating in the Hamper Drive since my very first year at Saints in 2013. The Hamper Drive is an excellent opportunity to bring the school community together to support an important holiday initiative. Overall, the Hamper Drive is one of my favourite events at the School and is an essential part of our identity.
William Jaques '27 — ½ Brother (Simon + Julie)
The Hamper Drive is something I look forward to every year as it makes our community a better place. I am honoured to have a bigger role in the Hamper Drive this year as it means I get to be that much closer and involved with helping our community.
Simon Jaques '81 — Dad
My family and I have been involved in the St. George’s Hamper Drive since 1976. Nearly everything in my life has changed since then, but the goals of the Hamper Drive have not. It is an opportunity for the St. George’s School community both old and new, to make a positive difference. Please don’t make the mistake of thinking this initiative is one for the School to just “look good.” The Hamper Drive enables families across the Lower Mainland the opportunity to enjoy the holiday season in what can be a stressful time. In short, it is the purest form of community giving that the School is capable of.
Tracey Hirsch — Mom
While the format of the Hamper Drive has evolved, I fondly recall those first years when I joined members of the Saints community and lined up outside the Dixon Gym, little dolly in hand, awaiting my turn to wheel a hamper box through a maze of overflowing tables in the gym. From food to toys to treats for parents, each table was unique. This event was special not just because of what was on the table but because of the people behind it – students, parents, alumni. It was filled with lots of costumes, lots of smiles, lots of warmth. It was a wonderful start to the holidays.
Russell Steiner — Step-Dad (Father of Zenera)
As a Scout Leader, my group was involved in the Hamper Drive, and we did the best we could to educate our group and explain what is going on and to recognize that every small gesture helps.I sincerely hope today’s hampers bring joy!
Julie Prutton — Step-Mom (Mother of Robert and William)
Being a part of the Hamper Drive over the years has united our family as we make a commitment to give back. Working together with the Saints community to pack and deliver boxes is something we look forward to every year. The boys have benefited from shopping and understanding the different hamper family needs. We have also met many passionate people who have come together to make a difference for families during the holidays. We look forward to Hamper Drive Assembly Day as we do every year!
Happy holidays from my family to yours!
~ Mr. Connor Jaques '17

In this week’s issue, we look forward to the final week of action for the 2024 calendar year in Saints Athletics.
