Mental Health Month

Mental Health Month serves as a reminder of the significance of mental well-being in our lives. It's a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage support for those facing mental health challenges. By spotlighting this issue, we can foster open conversations, promote understanding, and advocate for accessible resources and treatment options. Mental health affects us all, directly or indirectly, and acknowledging its importance helps create a more compassionate and supportive society. From destigmatizing mental health struggles to promoting self and community care practices, Mental Health Month plays a vital role in nurturing a culture of empathy and resilience. Students from the Health and Wellbeing Portfolio have planned a variety of activities throughout the month of May to celebrate and promote awareness! Stay tuned to the eNews to learn more…

Asian Heritage Month

Asian Heritage Month is an essential opportunity for Saints to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Asian communities. This helps to foster inclusion and appreciation for diversity. Celebrating Asian Heritage Month encourages dialogue, reflection, and the exploration of different perspectives and worldviews, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and culturally aware educational environment. Our JEDI Portfolio has planned both educational and fun activities to celebrate our first Asian Heritage Month at Saints!

Recap Of The Grade 12 Visit
To The Lil'wat Cultural Centre — April 24

On Wednesday, April 24th, the Grade 12s visited the Squamish Lil’Wat Cultural Centre in Whistler. During their visit, the students learned about using traditional Indigenous craftsmanship, made infinity bracelets, and experienced the wondrous delight of Bannock Tacos. These were some of the joys experienced by students from the Grade 12 English First Peoples Program. Students were immersed in furthering their appreciation and knowledge of the Squamish and Lil’wat Nations. They admired the extraordinary building that is architecturally inspired by a Squamish Longhouse and experienced what life was like for a Lil’wat family living in an Istken Pithouse. Matty McDonald ‘24 shared, “Having the opportunity to go to Whistler to visit the Squamish Lil’wat Cultural Centre was truly an amazing experience. Everything we learned on our visit reinforced our teachings throughout the year in English First Peoples 12 in an interactive and experiential way.”

Artist Statements

Kimson Yu '24

As an artist, I focus on expressing my creative thoughts through different materials. Predominantly, creating 2D artwork has been my favourite way to express myself; however, it has also limited how I present my ideas and the interactions between humans and artwork. After building a certain level of sensitivity to my surroundings, I have grown my interest in architecture, which led me toward producing 3D artwork. Creating 3D sculptures and models to experiment with various materials has increased my awareness of accessible materials in the surroundings and inspired my creativity to express my sentiments more vividly and interactively. My work is diverse, including acrylic paintings, digital paintings, collages, photographs, and 3D sculptures. Every work I have created has increased my interest in building more projects and experimenting with different materials and mediums, allowing me to think more creatively when testing their physical traits. I plan to further explore a broader range of materials and merge the concept with architecture.

Victor Teng '24

I like building things. For me, art is about applying the process of creative expression to work on a far greater scale than a canvas and challenging the boundaries of the status quo to push the limits of creativity.

My passion for art, specifically architecture, stems from my interest in origami. I enjoyed creating architectural forms and patterns, I was inspired by the work of the Bauhaus school and how innovative designs can be accessible to all. In my travels to Japan and China, I saw architectural spaces entailing rich cultural and social identities that contain antediluvian bonds between them and ourselves. I have become particularly interested in evaluating architecture within historical and environmental perspectives. I hope for a future where architecture is prominently connected to humans and nature, while accommodating the specific needs of those who use it. I fell in love with the rigorous process of planning, drafting, and creating a narrative that reflects my inquiry and wish to pursue…(about nature).

I have an innate desire to see things that have never been seen before. Ideas in ways they haven’t been presented. Stories told in ways they have yet to be heard. I decided to take charge of this, and have been bringing these things to life through my visual stories and digital art.
