Letter from the Head of School

September 17, 2021

Dear Parents and Guardians:

If you had occasion to be near St. George’s School on the first day of classes you would have seen, and definitely heard, the excitement and school spirit. The energy was tangible and fueled, I believe, in part by the bursting hope for a year with a richer school experience.

We remain fundamentally focused on health and safety.  Alongside that, we have an ever clearer understanding of ways we can safely offer more of that breadth of experience our boys crave.

As is always the case at independent schools, these opportunities and events will begin to arrive quickly and frequently, so I want to take this opportunity to frame the current landscape and the ways COVID-19 guidelines and procedures may impact it.

Much effort has gone into planning for our co-curricular programs, teams, and clubs - arenas in which boys learn about themselves in such beautifully pivotal ways. We are excited that many of these can be offered again, and we are moving ahead in a safe and thoughtful way.

Therefore, it is important I highlight that some of your son’s co-curricular or school activities may entail the use of third-party vendors that require proof of vaccination due to the current Public Health Order (e.g. restaurants, museums, theatres) or access to a venue that requires the same proof of vaccination (e.g. another school, sports arena). In addition, the Government of Canada announced in August that air travel within Canada might require proof of vaccination.

At this stage, we do not have the capacity to supervise a student participating in these events and trips who does not have the required vaccinations. You will, of course, be provided more detailed guidelines from your son’s teachers and coaches nearer to any given event or trip.

Another change that is important to share with you is how positive COVID-19 cases will now be reported. You may recall that last year, if there was a COVID-19 exposure at school a letter informing families was sent by the School on behalf of Public Health. This year Public Health will likely not directly notify the School in the event of a positive case in our community. Instead, Public Health’s tracing team will contact the individual positive case and reach out directly to any other individual who needs to be informed. Unlike last year, the School will only be contacted as needed; therefore, we will not be in a position to know, nor share, information related to COVID-19 cases, unless specifically informed by Vancouver Public Health.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I do understand that it can be tiring reading about COVID-19 updates; however, we also want to ensure you have the most up-to-date information.

At any time, if you have questions, please reach out to your son’s Principal or to myself.
