Young Saints Golf Team shows promise at the BC High School AAA Golf Championships
Abbotsford, BC – This past week, St. George’s made their 7th consecutive appearance at the 44th ‘AAA’ BC High School Golf Championships. The tournament was played at the Ledgeview Golf and Country Club in Abbottsford and it is also the home to the PGA champion Adam Hadwin. Representing our school were Alex Demens ’16, Perry Xin ’17, Riley Lai ’20, Kevin Li ’20 and Tony Li ’20. On the day one of the tournament, blazing sun had temperatures exceeding 30 degrees. Nevertheless, our boys persevered with Perry Xin lead our team with a 3-over 73. Alex Demens shot a 77, Kevin Li fired an 80 while Tony Li carded a round of 82. Riley Lai had to withdraw citing medical reasons. After round one, the team total was 312 which put the team in 7th place and only 4 shots out of 3rd place. Day two was much more difficult as the tournament organizers use the same pin locations they use for the professional tournaments. As a result, the player scoring average was worse across the tournament field. This did not stop Xin from once again leading the team with a low round of 76. Kevin Li was one shot behind at 77 while Riley overcame his medical condition to comeback and shoot an 80. Demens Alex shot an 82 with Tony Li rounding out the team one shot behind at 83. When all the dust settled, St. George’s finished 6th out of 22 teams and only one shot out of a 5th place finish. The team is commended for displaying incredible perseverance and mental toughness in less than ideal conditions.
