A program grounded in integrity
Rugby at St. George’s goes back almost as far as the inception of the school in the 1930s. The rugby program embodies the School’s core values and the healthy growth of body, mind, and spirit. Our program, grounded in integrity, promotes character development and collaboration. Hard work and humility are the backbones of our program, and our student-athletes learn to incorporate these philosophies into the sport and their daily lives.
The rugby program at St. George’s begins at the Junior School with Head of Rugby, Aled Thomas, teaching the boys the foundations of the game. At the Senior School, the boys continue to develop the skills and game sense necessary to play at their age grade. Eventually, those who have adopted and emulate the program’s philosophies and teachings of perseverance and hard work join the senior program, competing under the direction of Head of Sport, Mike Stiles, and his coaching staff.
St. George’s has an impressive record of success in rugby, winning 6 Provincial XV titles in ‘73, ‘74, ‘94, ‘04, ’05, and ’14, and 7 Provincial Seven’s Titles ’02, ’05, ’06, ’07, ’09, ’13, and ’14. Graduates of our program have played all over the world, playing at prestigious universities, clubs and some going on to represent Canada, Through the lessons we teach, and the philosophies we compete and train with, we are setting the boys up for a bright future wherever their paths may lead.
