Fostering an appreciation for literature and language
At St. George’s School, the English department is dedicated to exploring literature from the past and present while also providing avenues for students to hone their own writing voice and style. Whether it’s Orwell, Wagamese, or Shakespeare, we encourage our boys’ to make personal, textual, and real-world connections to develop empathy and build critical and creative thinking capacities.
In both core and elective courses, students have opportunities to interact with experts in the field, visit local galleries and museums, attend theatre performances, and read and write outdoors. The English department also offers creative writing and journalism electives to engage students in real-world writing experiences.
Each year, the English department works with the boys’ to produce
The Opus and The Creed publications and host a number of significant events including Poetry in Voice. Through this celebration of meaningful expression, our boys learn to communicate effectively and think creatively in an ever-changing world.
