Michael McKenzie '79

Dr. McKenzie received his MD in 1985 at Queen's University at Kingston. Following a Mixed Internship at the Montreal General Hospital and one year of internal medicine at UBC, he completed a residency in radiation oncology at UBC. Since 1991, he has been a radiation oncologist at the British Columbia Cancer Agency, Vancouver Cancer Centre. He has extensive clinical experience in genitourinary oncology, neurooncology and palliative oncology. Additional special clinical expertise includes permanent seed implantation for localized adenocarcinoma of the prostate and both stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic radiation therapy for intracranial disease. He has extensive experience conducting and leading clinical trials. Currently, he is a member of the Clinical Trials Committee at the National Cancer Institute of Canada Clinical Trials Group. In particular, current research interests include decision aids to assist patients and families in participating in goals of care discussions with health care professionals and a clinical trial of a new drug to be used with radiation therapy in the management of high risk localized prostate cancer. He is currently working with an inter professional team to develop a clinic to streamline and improve the care of patients requiring palliative radiation therapy.
I am choosing to be a mentor for a few reasons. First, I would like to give back to the School in gratitude for all the time and talents that the teachers and many others there shared with me. Second, I remember what it was like during my high school years, when I really didn't know what I wanted to do, and would like to help someone else make sense of that for themselves. Third, I'd like to see talented, caring, young people choose to be become health care professionals. Finally, although, like most physicians, from time to time, I grumble about some non-clinical aspects of my work, in general, I love what I do and enjoy sharing that passion.
