Since January 2014, Mark Bussanich has been a staff lawyer in the Professional Conduct group of the Law Society of B.C. His primary job is to investigate allegations of professional misconduct, breaches of Law Society Rules and conduct unbecoming lawyers. Where warranted, he makes recommendations to the Discipline Committee as to the appropriate disciplinary response. He also has spoken on behalf of the Law Society at Canadian Bar Association and Continuing Legal Education forums regarding professional conduct issues.
Prior to working at the Law Society, Mark practiced as a criminal lawyer since he was called to the bar. He has appeared in all levels of court in British Columbia and he has worked as an ad hoc prosecutor. His practice included defending persons and companies charged with Occupational Safety and Health offences and administrative law related to driving offences.
While in law school, he participated in the Law Students Legal Advice Program and the Criminal Clinic Program, both of which allowed him to gain early trial experience. He worked as a Law Clerk at the Supreme Court of British Columbia performing research for five judges.
Mark volunteers as an examiner and presenter for the Law Society of British Columbia's Professional Legal Training Course. He has also volunteered as a supervising lawyer for the UBC Law Students Legal Advice Clinic and the UBC Criminal Clinic Program. He has served on the faculty of the Continuing Legal Education Society's Criminal Law Bootcamp and he has lectured other lawyers on the nature and use of criminal record checks. He remains a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Criminal Law Subsection of its B.C. Branch.
I have had great mentors during my career. I still keep in touch with them and I value their input and guidance. Being a successful lawyer is near impossible without good mentorship.
