Phase I Construction Project Update

March 10, 2019
On Monday evening, St. George’s hosted a City-led Open House as part of the application process for a Development Permit for our Phase I construction project on the Senior School campus.  As you know, Phase I will consist of two L-shaped academic buildings, underground parking, and a central quadrangle, along with a multi-purpose building, ‘Saints Hall’ which will function as a dining hall, assembly hall, and venue for special occasions such as Graduation and Remembrance Day.

A routine part of the application process, the Open House provided our neighbours and other members of the community with an opportunity to view our plans and to talk with City officials, as well as with members of our Board and senior administration.  The Open House was well attended and went smoothly.  Although it is not directly related to the redevelopment of the Senior School campus, the main concern of our neighbours continues to be traffic, particularly around pick-up and drop-off times.  The good news is that the new facilities certainly will not exacerbate traffic, as we are not expanding our student population, and we will continue with our ongoing efforts to encourage more boys to ride the bus and to reduce traffic generally.

Once we secure a Development Permit, key next steps will include the finalization of construction documents, confirmation of budgets, and applying for a Building Permit.  This overall process is being managed by a Task Force consisting of members of the Foundation and School Boards along with senior management.  We are incredibly excited by the stunning design developed by Gensler and its Vancouver partner, IBI, and our current timeline anticipates that we will have shovels in the ground by this time next year.

During construction, we will always have two competition-sized fields, and we will never need to accommodate any students or programs in portables.  The first visible sign of the commencement of Phase I will occur this summer as we resize the Garcia Field on the northwest side of the campus to ensure that it is able to function as one of our premier fields. In the meantime, we are pushing ahead with our fundraising efforts through the ONE+ Campaign, and I continue to be amazed by the generosity and support of the St. George’s community.

As always, I can be contacted at tmatthews@stgeorges.bc.ca should you have any suggestions, comments or questions.
