School Update (May 24th, 1:00 pm)

Early this afternoon power was restored to the Senior School. A large tree had fallen in the windstorm cutting all power to the Senior School. For May 24th, co-curricular activities are cancelled at the Junior and Senior School unless specifically notified by the coach/teacher. There is no late bus available today. Regular classes and activities are scheduled for Thursday, May 25th.
At the Junior School, all students study music as part of their regular classroom activity. In the Primary Division, boys in Grades 1, 2, and 3 learn vocal music, and participate in the 100-member Primary Choir. They are involved in a musical each Spring, in addition to performing regularly for their parents. In Grade 4, boys start instrumental music by studying the recorder. During the year, half of their time is spent on vocal development, with the other half focusing on the recorder. Theory is taught throughout the year.

Boys in Grades 3 and 4 may join the Junior Choir, which performs regularly in the community at Christmas and at the end of May. In Grade 5, boys learn to play the clarinet for half a year, and then the trumpet for the other half. This forms a wonderful foundation for the following years. With great care and consideration, each student is placed on one of twelve different band instruments, which they will learn and perform on during their Grade 6 and 7 years. During this time, they will also be members of the Grade 6 Beginning Band and the Grade 7 Advanced Band. Each student will learn and perform a variety of styles of band music. All new boys are welcomed into the program, and receive specialized instruction to facilitate their smooth transition into the band program. Many performance opportunities exist, including the opportunity to play in small ensembles and sing in the Senior Choir.
