St. George’s School is home to a robust golf program that gives athletes the opportunity to compete and train every week in Vancouver, attend tournaments, and tour to locations across Canada and the USA. Our golf program provides an environment that encourages both skill development in the sport of golf and personal growth through the School’s Core Values. Team members are expected to be committed golfers with a passion and an ability for the sport.

Based out of Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, the St. George’s Golf Team competes weekly against other Independent School Association teams at courses across the Lower Mainland. The Team also competes at tournaments including the Sea to Sky Zone, the Provincial Championships, and our very own Saints Open .

  • Tryouts

Our tryout process occurs in late February and is open to boys in Grades 8–12.  The first phase begins with a brief individual interview to assess level of interest and discuss playing / competitive experience.  Those students who are new to the program will be invited to attend a driving range session at Musqueam Golf and Learning Academy.  Those boys who succeed in this first phase will move on to the next phase of tryouts which are held at the University Golf Club.  Students will be selected to play 9, 18, or 27 holes, depending on their performance over the course of the tryout. Once completed, the coaches will then make final selections for the Golf Team.   Please note that any boy interested in representing the School will be required to tryout regardless of his team status from the previous season.
  • Team Selection

Team selections are made prior to Spring Break and the roster size ranges from 18 – 22 student-athletes from Grades 8 –12. Selection is based on a broad criteria including, but not limited to, character, commitment, competitiveness, ability, potential, passion and knowledge of the game. Historically, boys who have been successful in making the team are playing golf 8 – 10 months per year. Team members will be expected to make a full commitment to the team and this will include one team training session per week and one to two matches per week throughout the full 10-week season.

Home Course

Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club is a tree-lined, parkland-style golf course overlooking the mouth of the Fraser River and Strait of Georgia. While the club itself dates back to 1911, the actual course was constructed in 1960, designed by Arthur Vernon Macan: a Scottish immigrant who was one of the region’s best golfers. Many of the trees at Shaughnessy, which boast over one hundred and fifty different species, were donated by club members and planted when the course was being built. Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club has long been regarded as one of the best golf courses in Canada, currently ranked in the top 20 by Scoregolf Magazine. The club has hosted many high profile pro events, including the 2011 Canadian Open which coincided with Shaughnessy’s 100th Anniversary.
