Teaching at St. George's School

What makes teaching at St. George’s rewarding?  Often, the view from outside the school is that our boys come from a privileged background with all sorts of assets and supports in place. However, the reality is our students come from a variety of backgrounds and experience the same challenges and dreams as students in other schools. The reward at St. George’s is the boys have a focus and determination to try and overcome their challenges and work towards their dreams.

In many ways there are reduced distractions at St. George’s allow our boys to focus on what matters.  As a single gender school, our boys tend to find freedom without traditional expectations on boys. Our students thrive in a variety of endeavours, ranging from the sports field to ceramics, drama, and poetry.  Wearing a uniform also provides the boys with a common experience; there is little to differentiate our boys by what they wear and rather they are encouraged to make their mark through their actions. The narrow focus of our students allows our teachers to work confidently with engaged students.

Our students have ambitions to make a difference in the world. St. George’s provides a variety of ways for students to learn more about the world. All students are engaged in service learning and many students dive deeper into contributing to our community.  Through outdoor education program all of our boys experience extended, human powered trips that challenge them to work together and interact with our natural landscape.  Developing Global Citizens is a primary focus for our students and working with the boys allows our teachers to make connections and find ways to contribute to our community and beyond.

The St. George’s community brings all of the rewards of teaching come together. Our teachers work together to support students and to design engaging learning in the classroom. Outside of the classroom our community is alive and well. Our boys and families know that St. George’s is their community, and they engage fully in getting to know and support one another.

St. George’s School is more than what you might expect. It is a vibrant community full of engaged, dedicated teachers and students who are working together to figure out how they might make this world a better place.
