In November and at the beginning of December we begin to collect items for underprivileged families in Vancouver, in preparation for the annual St. George’s School Hamper Drive. As you may know, the drive began more than three decades ago as the vision of former teacher and Old Boy, Mr. Geof Stancombe, and it is now supported by our entire community of students, staff, faculty, alumni, parents, neighbours, and local businesses. This year our focus is more than ever on families with young children, single parent families, and teens living alone.
Each hamper contains perishable and non-perishable food items and toys for children to help our adopted families more fully enjoy the holidays. Items will be collected over the next several weeks, until volunteers gather on the first Friday and Saturday of the Winter Break (December 15 and 16, 2017) to finish packing and then deliver the hampers. Recipient families are sponsored by social service and health agencies, community associations, and local schools. What differentiates the St. George’s Hamper Drive in particular is the personalization of our hampers and that we deliver each hamper to the recipients’ homes on the day.
We have set a target of approximately 265 hampers for this year’s drive, but we can only reach this goal with the help of individuals and businesses in the wider community. We would be most grateful if you would be able to help with a donation(s) of any of the following much-needed items:
- Non-perishable and perishable food items (pasta, peanut butter, canned goods, rice, etc.)
- Toiletries (soaps, toothbrushes, toothpaste, etc.)
- Cash donations (eligible for tax receipt)
- Gift Cards in $10 denominations to London Drugs or Shoppers Drug Mart (for personal purchase items in the hampers)
We will gratefully accept all offers, no matter what quantity. We are able to accept donations beginning the week of December 4 for non-perishable goods, and as close to December 16 as possible for any perishable items.
If you wish to contribute financially, please forward your donation (in the form of a cheque payable to St. George’s School – Hamper Drive) to the attention of the Advancement Department at St. George’s School. We will issue a tax receipt for all gifts in excess of $25.
