Rugby at St. George’s goes back almost as far as the inception of the School in the 1930s. The sport of Rugby is grounded in core values of integrity and respect, as is St. George’s School. Determination, trust, and humility are also focal points of our program, and our student-athletes learn to incorporate these lessons into the sport and into their daily lives.

The Rugby Program at St. George’s begins at the Junior School with Head Coach Aled Thomas establishing the foundational skills of the game with boys in Grades 6 and 7. At the Senior School under the guidance of Head of Rugby, Mike Stiles, and the Senior School Rugby coaching staff, Grade 8 and 9 participants continue to develop these skills and broaden their understanding of the game.

Eventually, those who have taken to heart the values of camaraderie, hard work, and perseverance will join the Junior and Senior program. The strength of our rugby program is in the number of our participants and the healthy competition and development that this fosters. There are no cuts, and there is a position and role for every player who commits to the team.

St. George’s Rugby values the benefits of international tours. Every Spring Break, the school sends a team abroad to challenge themselves against traditional rugby countries while learning about different cultures and developing our own team values, cohesion, and camaraderie. As well, St. George’s has a storied history of hosting touring schools from around the world.

St. George’s has an impressive record of success in Rugby, winning 6 Provincial XV Championships and 11 Provincial Sevens Championships in the past few decades. Graduates of our program have played all over the world at the university, club, and national team level; recently, three St. George’s alumni appeared for the first ever Canadian Olympic Men’s Rugby Sevens team at Tokyo 2020.

Through the lessons we teach, and the philosophies we compete and train with, we are setting the boys up for a bright future wherever their paths may lead.
