As both professional educators and specialists, the Junior School Student Services team understands and responds to the many challenges of today’s elementary and middle schoolboy. The department is divided into three distinct but interrelated pillars: Learning Resource, Personal Counselling, and Inquiry-Based Learning/Enrichment.
Our comprehensive program aligns and works with the guiding principles of our School’s mission and delivers its service in these areas:
Pillar 1: Learning Resource
- Academic and diagnostic assessment
- Development of appropriate Individual Educational Plans and Student Support Plans
- Academic support planning, including executive functioning skills, test-taking skills, and learning styles awareness
- Attend to and support student, staff and parent concerns, which may affect a student's academic progress and development
- Goal-setting and decision-making
Pillar 2: Counselling
- Support students in a variety of counselling issues including anxiety, stress, behaviour issues, social skills, bullying, self-advocacy, communication, grief and loss
- Self-Awareness (personal, academic, social) education as they relate to academic potential, special aptitudes, and interests
- Interpersonal skill development, self-assertiveness training, and coping strategies
- Communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution
Pillar 3: Inquiry-Based Learning/Enrichment
- Exploration of personal interests through independent and small group projects
- Math enrichment, extension, and hosting of contests
- Advanced book club
- Daily running and maintenance of the Makerspace
- Skills Canada challenge-based competitions
How we deliver our programming:
- Individual and small-group counselling and advising
- In-class support
- Pull out remedial intervention, academic support, and inquiry-based projects
- Crisis intervention
- Consultation. collaboration and team teaching
- Referrals to private practitioners
Counselling Services are made available based on recommendations from administration, teachers, parents, self-referral, or is initiated by the School Counsellor. Learning Resource Services are made available based on individual needs. Referrals come from classroom teachers, administration, or are initiated by the Resource Teacher.
