A graduate of the University of Western Ontario and McMaster University, Dr. Matthews began his teaching career in the Department of History at McMaster University, where he won several teaching awards, before making the move to independent school education more than twenty-five years ago. A Housemaster and Head of History at Upper Canada College, he later served as Director of Academics at St. Michaels University School in Victoria, BC. Most recently, prior to coming to St. George’s, he served as Headmaster of Hillfield Strathallan College, a large, co-ed day school in Hamilton, Ontario. One of the most powerful experience he has had as an educator was leading a series of service work trips to a remote region of Nepal in support of a Canadian-based charity that built schools, primary healthcare stations and waterworks systems.
Married to Sheena for more than thirty years and the father of two sons and a daughter, Dr. Matthews loves travel, music, theatre, reading and the outdoors. He has a passion for teaching and learning, and is firmly committed to a broad and inclusive approach to education that embraces academics, the arts, athletics, leadership, outdoor education and service. In his role as Headmaster, he believes that his most important responsibility is to work with all stakeholders at St. George’s to make Saints an even better school for the benefit of its students, present and future.
