To All Members of the St. George's School Community:

We are writing to update you on an historic decision made by the Board at its most recent meeting on January 20th, 2014.

As a direct outgrowth of the School’s Strategic Plan and its commitment to establishing St. George’s as a world leader in the education of boys, the Board unanimously agreed that the first phase of the implementation of the Campus Master Plan will be the construction of two new academic buildings on the Senior School campus, along with the ongoing renewal of teaching and learning spaces in the Junior School. In order to bring this plan to fruition, the Board requested that the Headmaster move forward with organizing an initial $40 million Capital Campaign. The largest and most ambitious in the School’s history, this Campaign will be a community-wide endeavour, involving past and current parents, Old Boys, faculty and staff, and friends of the School.

As you may recall, the Campus Master Plan is not intended to increase the size of the student population. Rather, our overriding goal is to ensure that we have the facilities that will allow us to implement a truly boy-centred approach to teaching and learning. Additional details on the Plan are available on the School’s website at The construction of the academic buildings on the Senior Campus and the renewal of Junior School teaching and learning spaces will not disrupt programs or dislocate any students, and upon completion will set the stage for future phases. Once successfully completed, the other elements contained in the Campus Master Plan will be reviewed by the Board for decisions on future project phasing and fundraising.

The Board approved the Campus Master Plan in principle in the spring, and in late December, we submitted a formal rezoning request to the City of Vancouver. Therefore, in the near future, you can expect to see rezoning signs on the senior campus, as well as notification of a public meeting hosted by the City of Vancouver. The rezoning process could take a year or longer to complete, and we have not yet begun the process of designing the new buildings. Reflecting our commitment to sound financial management, we will not commence construction until we have raised the lion’s share of the $40 million for this first phase of construction through our fundraising efforts.

In response to the Board’s decision, management has begun the process of developing a comprehensive fundraising plan. Our expectation is that this process will take about six months, and we will provide additional updates in the months ahead. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us should you have any questions or concerns.

Yours sincerely,

Dr. Tom Matthews
